Yellowstone Trail Stix

My husband and I were backpacking in Yellowstone Park in 1960. One of our friends brought nutritious whole-wheat snacks, and shared them with us. I thought they were excellent travel food. When we returned to Casper, I asked his wife for the recipe. She told me she made them for her husband whenever he went camping. They're not sweet like modern "health bars." They taste a little like granola.

2 Cups

2 Cups

2 Cups

1/2 Cup

1/2 t.

1 Scant Cup

Water

Flour: Whole Wheat

Flour: White

Coconut: fine grated

Sugar (or a bit more)

Salt

Oil

...enough to make a stiff dough

Optional ingredients (add none, some, or all):

1/2 Cup

1/2 Cup

1/2 Cup

Sesame Seeds: Toasted

Pecans: Chopped

Walnuts: Chopped

Mix the dry ingredients together. Blend in the oil and enough cold water to roll out the dough. Cut into four-inch strips. Bake at 325 degrees until the sticks are dry all the way though (about 50 minutes). Be certain none of the sticks are touching while baking. Watch to see that the sides don't burn. Makes approximately three dozen sticks.
